How Sensory Processing Supports Learning and Development

When a child is having difficulty with handwriting, attention, emotional regulation, getting dressed, participating in a classroom, or learning a new motor skill, it is natural to focus on the skill we can see.

We may practice forming letters, remind them to pay attention, offer strategies for managing big feelings, or break the task into smaller steps. These approaches can be helpful, but sometimes the visible challenge is only the top layer of what is happening.

The Learning Pyramid offers a helpful way to visualize the many foundational abilities that support a child’s learning and development. At the base of the pyramid are the sensory systems. As we move upward, we see increasingly complex abilities such as body awareness, coordination, attention, emotional regulation, visual-perceptual skills, daily living skills, and academic learning.

This does not mean that development always happens in a perfectly linear order or that a child must master one level before moving to the next. Children’s development is far more dynamic than that. However, the pyramid reminds us that higher-level abilities do not develop in isolation. They are supported by the child’s ability to receive, organize, and respond to information from their body and environment.

Building on the Sensory Foundation

The lower levels of the Learning Pyramid include the sensory systems and the central nervous system’s ability to organize sensory information. These foundational processes support the development of body awareness, postural stability, balance, coordination, motor planning, and a sense of safety within the body.

Those abilities then contribute to increasingly complex skills.

A child needs body awareness and postural control to sit comfortably at a desk. They need coordinated eye and hand movements to copy from the board or catch a ball. They rely on motor planning to learn an unfamiliar movement, organize the steps of getting dressed, or figure out how to climb onto playground equipment. Their nervous system needs to be regulated enough to direct attention toward a teacher, tolerate unexpected changes, and remain engaged when a task becomes challenging.

At the higher levels of the pyramid, we find abilities such as attention, emotional regulation, visual perception, communication, daily living skills, and academic learning. These are often the areas adults notice first because they are more visible and are frequently connected to expectations at home or school.

But when a child struggles at the top of the pyramid, it is worth becoming curious about what may be happening underneath.

When the Visible Challenge Has a Sensory Component

A child’s difficulty with a higher-level skill may involve several underlying factors. Sensory processing may be one important part of the picture.

For example, a child who struggles with handwriting may need support with fine motor coordination. They may also have difficulty maintaining an upright posture, understanding where their hand is in space, coordinating their eyes and hands, or determining how much pressure to place on the pencil.

A child who seems inattentive in the classroom may not simply need more reminders to focus. Their nervous system may be working hard to process the hum of the lights, movement around the room, conversations in the hallway, the feeling of the chair, and the visual information covering the walls. Another child may need more movement or body-based sensory input to reach the level of alertness required for learning.

A child who avoids playground equipment may appear fearful or reluctant to try new things. Underneath that hesitation, they may feel uncertain about movement, balance, or where their body is in space.

A child who becomes upset while getting dressed may not be resisting the routine itself. They may be responding to uncomfortable fabrics, seams, temperature changes, body-awareness challenges, or the motor-planning demands involved in putting on clothing.

A child who falls apart after school may have spent the day working hard to manage sensory input, social expectations, transitions, and academic demands. By the time they reach a safe environment, their nervous system may no longer have the capacity to manage another demand.

These examples are not meant to suggest that every challenge is sensory in nature. Development is complex, and a child’s abilities are influenced by many interacting factors. However, considering the sensory foundation can help adults look beyond the immediate behavior or skill and develop a fuller understanding of what the child may need.

Why Practicing the Skill Is Not Always Enough

Sometimes children need direct instruction and repeated opportunities to practice. But practice is most effective when the foundational abilities required for the task are also supported.

If a child does not feel stable in their body, reminding them to sit still may not help them develop postural control. If an environment is overwhelming their nervous system, frequent reminders to pay attention may add another demand without addressing the reason attention is difficult. If a child cannot clearly feel where their body is in space, practicing a complex motor task repeatedly may lead to frustration rather than confidence.

This is why occupational therapists often take a bottom-up and top-down approach at the same time. We support the foundational sensory and motor abilities contributing to the challenge while also helping the child participate more successfully in the actual routines and activities that matter to them.

Occupational therapists are trained to look beyond the visible challenge and consider the sensory, motor, regulatory, environmental, and task-related factors that may be contributing to it. By understanding what is happening underneath the skill, we can provide individualized support that helps the child participate more comfortably and confidently in the activities that matter to them.

The goal is not to “fix” the child’s sensory system or make them respond to the world in a more typical way. The goal is to understand how their individual nervous system works and identify the supports, skills, adaptations, and experiences that help them feel safe, capable, and connected.
